What is hormonal imbalance?

Hormonal imbalance describes a state in which one or more hormones are produced in quantities that are too high, too low, or out of proper ratio with other hormones in your system. Hormones are chemical messengers that regulate virtually every physiological process: metabolism, mood, reproductive function, sleep, appetite, body temperature, and cognitive function. When these messengers are disrupted, the downstream effects are widespread and often interconnected.

In women, hormonal imbalance most commonly manifests as irregular menstrual cycles, PMS that disrupts daily functioning, difficulty maintaining weight, acne, mood swings, fatigue, and reduced fertility. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid dysfunction, perimenopause, and adrenal fatigue each create distinct hormonal disruption patterns. In men, hormonal imbalance typically presents as low testosterone symptoms: fatigue, reduced muscle mass, weight gain, mood changes, and diminished sexual function.

The challenge with hormonal imbalance is that symptoms are nonspecific. Fatigue, weight gain, and mood changes can have dozens of causes, leading many patients on a long journey of misdiagnosis or dismissal before the hormonal root cause is identified. Comprehensive hormonal evaluation, combined with targeted bioidentical hormone therapy, can produce transformative results for patients who have been struggling with vague, persistent symptoms that standard medicine has failed to resolve.

What disrupts hormonal balance

1

Age-related decline

Estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, and growth hormone all decline with age. Perimenopause can begin in the late 30s, with significant hormonal shifts occurring over 5-10 years.

2

Thyroid dysfunction

The thyroid gland regulates metabolic rate. Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis are among the most common hormonal disorders, affecting up to 12% of the population.

3

PCOS and reproductive conditions

Polycystic ovary syndrome involves elevated androgens, insulin resistance, and disrupted ovulation, creating a complex hormonal imbalance that affects weight, skin, mood, and fertility.

4

Chronic stress

Prolonged cortisol elevation from chronic stress depletes progesterone (the calming hormone), disrupts thyroid function, and suppresses reproductive hormones through the HPA axis.

How we restore hormonal balance

INA uses bioidentical hormones, molecules that are structurally identical to the hormones your body naturally produces, to restore optimal levels and ratios. Bioidentical estradiol relieves the vasomotor symptoms, mood disruption, and bone loss associated with estrogen decline. Progesterone restores the calming, sleep-promoting counterbalance to estrogen and is essential for women receiving estrogen therapy. Combined HRT provides a complete hormone restoration protocol for patients with multiple deficiencies.

For patients with PCOS or reproductive hormonal imbalance, our Hormonal Balance protocol addresses the specific pattern of excess androgens, insulin resistance, and progesterone deficiency that characterizes the condition. Thyroid optimization ensures that the master metabolic regulator is functioning within the narrow range required for optimal energy, weight management, and mood. Your INA physician designs a protocol based on your symptom pattern, hormonal history, and health goals, with ongoing monitoring and adjustment.

Frequently asked questions

What are bioidentical hormones?
Bioidentical hormones are synthesized to be molecularly identical to the hormones your body produces naturally. Unlike synthetic hormones (such as those used in older HRT formulations), bioidentical hormones bind to your receptors in the same way as your endogenous hormones, which may reduce the risk of side effects and improve tolerability.
Is hormone replacement therapy safe?
Modern bioidentical HRT, prescribed at physiological doses and monitored by a physician, has a favorable safety profile for most patients. The risks associated with older synthetic HRT formulations (from the 2002 WHI study) do not directly apply to bioidentical hormones. Your INA physician will evaluate your individual risk factors, including personal and family history, before prescribing.
How do I know if my hormones are imbalanced?
Common symptoms include irregular periods, severe PMS, unexplained weight gain, persistent fatigue, mood swings, acne, hair thinning, hot flashes, night sweats, low libido, and difficulty sleeping. While symptoms are suggestive, hormone testing can provide objective confirmation. Your INA physician may recommend specific lab work based on your symptom pattern.
Can hormonal imbalance cause weight gain?
Yes. Hormonal imbalance is one of the most common underlying causes of unexplained weight gain. Low thyroid function slows metabolism. Elevated cortisol promotes visceral fat storage. Insulin resistance (often linked to PCOS) makes weight loss extremely difficult. Declining estrogen redistributes fat to the midsection. Addressing the hormonal root cause often makes weight management significantly more achievable.
How long do I need to be on HRT?
Treatment duration depends on your specific condition and goals. For perimenopausal and menopausal symptoms, many women benefit from HRT for 5-10 years or longer. For PCOS-related imbalance, treatment may be ongoing or intermittent. Your INA physician will reassess your protocol regularly and help you determine the right duration.
Will HRT affect my fertility?
Bioidentical progesterone and estradiol can actually support fertility in some cases by correcting hormonal imbalances that impair ovulation. However, certain hormonal treatments are not compatible with active attempts to conceive. Your INA physician will design your protocol with your reproductive goals in mind.
